Mom’s Birthday Card

July 5, 2013

My Mom’s birthday is June 24th, but with Dad’s on July 4th and Faith’s on July 3rd we did one large get together this year.  As the cost of cards has gotten ridiculous (the new Hallmark line is $7 – $12!) I’ve taken to trying to use my supplies and make my own.

Mom’s favorite color is red, but I didn’t have any accent paper that didn’t come out looking like a red, white and blue 4th of July card.  I decided to use the color she wears most of the time…navy.

I used Bazzil cardstock for the Navy and Cream.  The stamp is Triple Treat Flower by Stampin’ Up.  I also used the matching Stampin’ Up punches, but gosh if I remember their names now.  The ink color is Brilliant Blue.  I really like how it came out.  It’s pretty, but not over frilly if that makes any sense at all. Oh, I also did a top fold card just for something different.
I really need to find some more of the blue ribbon. I think I’ve used in in three projects lately.  It’s actually not crafting ribbon, but was wrapped around a blanket that my friend Anita gave M when he was born.  Funny – it’s my favorite ribbon and the blanket is M’s favorite too.
Have you been making your cards due to the increased prices?

Scrapstuffz “Inspired by” July Challenge

July 1, 2013

Today is the big reveal for my first official Scrapstuffz design team piece.  Here is our inspiration piece.

It really took me a while to decide what I wanted to do with this since I knew right away I didn’t want to go the 4th of July route.  What I ended up using was circles and the color scheme.
The first thing I did was lightly mist the paper, but I wanted to have the spotted look – not even color.  It’s much easier to notice in person, but it really adds to the overall effect.  The circles are cut using the Creative Memories circle system…one of my first scrapbook purchases many years ago.
My title was cut using Cricut Craft Room and the Jasmine font.  I used a text box and decreased the letter spacing and then made a shadow to have them stand out.
I think my favorite part is that the half circle to the right of the top picture is a tab to pull out hidden journalling.  I always want to journal, but feel my poor handwriting takes away from the pages.  This was the perfect solution.
We really hope you’ll come over and join us this month for the challenge, and I can’t wait to see how the picture inspires you.

My first project is a 12×12 scrapbook layout that I absolutely love.  It was my first time using paints and a banner.  4th of July is a big deal for our family as my sister was born on the 3rd, my Dad is the 4th and cousin Danny is the 14th.  We had gone out to eat the year these photos were taken so no one had a mess to clean up.  It’s really hard to tell, but the red section is where my journalling is.

The star is two layers of chipboard that I painted with acrylic paint.  I rippled the ribbon underneath to hopefully give the effect of a waving flag.  The banner was made with my new Stampin’ Up pendant punch.

For the title I used Cricut Craft Room to weld the letters and then covered them with red stickles for a bit of a pop.  I wanted the colors to be more antique like, but it needed just that pop.
